The Cat That Only Sat
The Cat That Only Sat
Phat Cat brushed against the mirror on his way to his favorite brown leather couch. The hefty cat looked at the dining room table for leftovers which he ate every chance he could get. They called him Phat Cat. He watched television just like the family did, and heard the word Phat meant a good thing, and he always walked proudly with his tail up in the air.
Phat Cat had a rounded body with long gray fur. When he walked his belly wobbled back and forth. Lucky for him, Brendan the boy that lived in the house with him was a fussy eater. There wasn’t a day that went by that Phat Cat didn’t lick ever morsel off of Brendan’s plate.
Phat Cat spent his day either watching television or looking outside the window at the neighborhood cat who strolled by the same time every morning. Tail up in the air, smooth dark fur, and slender as a panther, the cat outside always made Phat Cat look up and take notice. Peering through the sunbeams he put his head between his paws thinking. His narrow green eyes watched as Ebony walked down the street.
Ebony was a fabled cat, and all the outside cats were in awe of him. He was quite the street fighter and most cats were glad they never went outside. No one ever bothered Ebony, and Phat Cat was getting tired of the meows praising Ebony’s fights and beauty. He hefted himself up on two paws with his behind seated on the couch he let out a furious hiss when Ebony walked by.
Phat Cat looked out of the large picture window and knew he was safe from fleas and diseases he could catch from being outside.
It was time to take action!
Phat Cat wandered down the stairs to the family room where his mistress was exercising on the treadmill. With a strained jump he got on the treadmill in back of her.
Exercise was a nasty thing to Phat Cat but it sure was fun on the treadmill pretending he was the main cat, on the street and walking behind his mistress for everyone to envy. His mistress name was Sally and she looked in back of her seeing him walk on the treadmill and laughed.
Sally his owner and the lady of the house began cooking healthy meals, lots of vegetables and fish. With daily exercise he was soon able to jump on the stool in the kitchen. In fact he impressed Sally so much she went out and bought him a cat climbing tree with lots of toys on it.
Ebony quickly lost his popularity causing so many fights with the outdoor cats. His fur was chewed and one morning he hobbled by Phat Cat’s home. That was the same morning that Sally left the door slightly open which was an invite for Ebony to walk inside.
Phat Cat was eating with fine manners from his crystal bowl filled with fish and vegetables, and looked out of the corner of his eye seeing Ebony had something in his mouth. They both stared at each other waiting to see who was going to back down and leave the house.
Oh cats can laugh, and the smile on Phat Cat’s face was precious.
He took his paw and slid the dish over to Ebony who looked tired and bedraggled. The mouse was left outside the door, and Ebony gratefully learned that green vegetables were very good for you, and the tiny bits of carrots beat any mouse he had ever caught outside.
Graciously Sally invited Ebony to stay, but not before bathing him and cleaning his ears. Phat Cat was glad to welcome Ebony into his home, and to this day a gray faced cat AND an ebony face cat press their noses to the window looking outside.
They were happy eating fresh fish sprinkled with herbs and vegetables, and followed Sally on the treadmill every day. Exercise became fun, especially when you have someone else to exercise with.
So you see vegetables, fresh fish, and exercise taught the children in the house to follow the cat’s examples. Everyone in Phat Cat’s house became the healthiest people on Walker Street, just by following Phat Cat’s example.
